Calia's Hair Care Review: Hydrating and Balancing Collection

Hello my lovely petals,

Long time no see, I hope all is well with all of you.  Once again, I apologize for my lack of blog posts lately.  Like all of our lives, mine has been filled with tons of chaos, both good and bad.  But, I'm back with a bang and ready to give you a review that you'll never forget!  I know that you'll all end up wanting these products!!!

And now, on to the magical review of Calia's Hydrating and Balancing Hair Care collection...

My Story:
As I mentioned in my last post, finding the right hair care products has always been a struggle of mine.  Some left my hair too oily while others made my hair flat and lifeless.  If you want to read more details about my hair type and the various natural hair care items that I've tried in the past, read the 'My Story' section on my latest post.  Either way, I never settled for less or gave up looking,  I am both happy and relieved to say that I have found my dream hair care and skin care product company.  I know that many people say that they have found their favorite hair care product, but continue to try more.  But, I can officially say, that I will never go back to any other brand as long as this company is still around. Their company is truly amazing! Their concoctions are a gift from the heavens and I am not exaggerating one bit! I am speechless and in shock of how great their products are.

I hear many people say that it is important to vary your hair care (specifically shampoo and conditioner) and not continuously use the same shampoo for a while, as your hair will get used to it and no longer reap its benefits. However, this claim only applies to shampoos and conditioners filled with various chemicals.  These chemicals (including, sodium lauryl sulfate, dimethicone, and sodium EDTA etc) strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils and can in turn damage it. These chemically filled products might work at first, but will eventually damage your hair.  For this reason, you will have to (or are recommended to) switch to another brand of shampoo (one that your hair has not yet been damaged by) in order to "restore" your hair back to its healthy state.  This constant chemical shampoo/hair care switch then becomes a deadly cycle.  The unnatural shampoos coat your hair in chemicals to diminish the damage.  But once your hair gets used to the chemicals reaction, it becomes damaged again and you have no choice but to switch to a different chemically composed product to solve the problem.  If you switch to another unnatural shampoo, the same damage pattern will happen to your hair.  But, if you switch to a natural shampoo, you hair will be restored and no switch will ever need to be made again. In other words, your hair will never be fully restored unless you switch to a more natural based shampoo that will nourish your hair.  When you find a natural shampoo made with good quality ingredients and is chemical free, you will never have to switch to another shampoo, as your hair will be constantly nourished and will never be damaged from chemicals again.  I hear so many of my friends say that they have not yet found a good shampoo for their hair type.  The truth is, regardless of your hair type, a good quality natural shampoo and conditioner (in this case, Calia's) will work for you and nourish your luscious locks regardless of what you consider your hair-type to be.

About the company:
This company goes by the name of Calia.  Other than making the most wonderful products, they have a beautiful motto, 'Always act naturally.' Calia was started by Randall Cunningham who desired to create natural skin and hair care products without using harsh chemicals. He focuses on only using ingredients sourced from nature to provide the best benefits to both ones skin and hair. They are a small, independent company located on Canada's West Coast, and aim to assist their customers with their skin and hair care needs.  The company's main focus is to create natural high quality hair and skin care.  Calia is also made up of a wonderful team.  I spoke to Randy myself and can say that he is the most friendliest person I have ever spoken to.  Shira McDermott, who handles their social media and responds to most emails that you send through their website, is very friendly and will always respond quickly to your emails and answer all your questions.  Out of all the customer service I've received over the years, theirs is by far the best.  They truly want to help you achieve a more natural lifestyle as well as help your skin and hair care needs. They commit to giving you the best sourced ingredients possible and 'always act naturally' in doing so.

Where can I purchase these items and how much does it cost?:
All their magical items can be purchased on their site, www.calianatural.com.  Their website is very user friendly and extremely well organized. Even a non-technologically savvy person like myself can navigate it. If you are lucky and live in the lower mainland of Canada, their items can be purchased in Urban Fare, Save on Foods, PriceSmart food etc.  Calia's products are also offered at other retailers which can be easily found on their website.  I purchase all my Calia products online and they arrived to me within a week of purchase.  As for the items pictured, the Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner and the Balancing Shampoo and Conditioner are 360mL and each cost a reasonable price of $14.49.  You can purchase a smaller 240mL size of the same items for $10.99 or their largest size, a 4 liter bottle for $105.00. Their Hydrating and Balancing leave-in conditioner spray both are 240mL and cost $10.99.  If you want to get more of a deal or try more than one line, Calia offers special packages that are a great way to save money and try a variety of their products. I always purchase their package deals, as you get more of a variety. You might think that their items are a bit pricey, but a little bit goes a long way and their products are made from the highest quality ingredients (which are all listed on their website). You also do not need to wash your hair as often when using these products. That definitely saves money!!! Just to add, Calia recently came out with a Purifying line, but I'm saving those products for another review post.

What are the benefits of these products?:
I could just go on and on about benefits of these products. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NEGATIVE TO SAY! Their products have transformed my hair for the better.  They have made my hair soft, more manageable, clean, non-greasy, moisturized, hydrated, healthy and the list goes on.  I can honestly say that I will never go back to another company for my hair or skin care needs.  When I have kids in the future, this is company that their hair and skin products will come from. I trust no one else, and that is saying a lot. Their products are gentle, great for sensitive skin, mildy scented and do what they say they will. They even offer a fragrance free line and children's 2in1shampoo and body wash in case you have sensitive skin or are sensitive to essential oils. Furthermore, their scented products are only scented with natural and organic essential oils.  All their items are made with the same base, but scented differently with different essential oils.  Their Hydrating line is scented with Lavender, Bergamot and Rose Geranium essential oils, while their Balancing line is scented with Cedarwood and Rosewood essential oils.  The Hydrating line smells like a lavish floral garden, while the Balancing line smells like a light woodsy rain forest.  Both lines are unisex, which is great!  I love both lines equally, as they both do their job. The Hydrating line moisturizes my long locks and the Balancing line gives my hair a deep clean and ensures that the naturals oils from my scalp are evenly balanced.  But, both lines have made my hair extremely healthy and super soft. The leave-in conditioner sprays (both hydrating and balancing) add even more nourishment, smoothness and a pleasant smell to my luscious locks.

How do I use these products:
1.) Like any standard shampoo, I wet my hair, pour a small quarter size amount of the shampoo into my hand and work it into a lather on my hair and scalp, from root to tip.  After some intense rubbing and a scalp massage, I  thoroughly rinse out all remnants of the shampoo.  And trust me, I have medium to long hair, you only need a small amount.

2.) After rinsing out all the shampoo, I pour out a quarter size amount of the conditioner and apply it all over my hair, focusing mainly on my ends.  I then leave it in my hair for about three minutes or longer, while I wash my body (and shave if necessary).  After I finish washing my body, I thoroughly wash out any remaining conditioner.

3.) When I exit the shower, I lightly towel dry my hair and spray a few spritzes of either the Hydrating or Balancing leave in conditioner spray and gently comb my hair through with a wooden wide-tooth comb.

Product Con's:
NONE WHATSOEVER!  I know it seems a bit strange that a product doesn't have a negative side, but none of their products have anything negative about them.  Look at how my hair looks (see picture below) after using just their Hydrating line (shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioner spray) and air/towel drying it; I never use heat!  Their products have done wonders for my hair and have boosted my self confidence and self esteem.  I am an honest person and will always tell the truth about a product (see my last post). Calia's products truly rank high and reign supreme! The only con, would be having to choose between the Hydrating and Balancing line, as they are both so amazing!
Overall thoughts:
I think you all know my thoughts by now.  Calia is truly the best of the best! I give all 6 products 5 out of 5 petals, as they all perform beautifully. I hope that Randy and his fellow Calia team members continue to make new and exciting products and be around for eternity.  They are making magic! I just can't wait to see what they have in store next.

Pura D'or Shampoo, Conditioner and Argan Oil Review

Hello my lovely petals,

I hope that all is well on your end.  Today, I come to you with an update on a previously removed post.

Update: There was a person who was unhappy with my review and requested that I remove it. After taking another look at the products, I am re-posting.

And now, on to the review of...

Pura Do'r organic shampoo, conditioner, and argan oil.

I was very lucky to have received a wonderful package from Pura D'or a couple months ago. The package included their Argan Oil Premium Organic Shampoo Hair Loss Prevention Therapy, Argan Oil Premium Organic Conditioner Lavender Vanilla, and a one ounce bottle of their pure organic Argan Oil.

The Pura D'or company, "for more than four years, has been growing a culture planted on a natural set of values and beliefs." Their motto is to "create organic personal care solutions that work
naturally."

My Story:

Let me start off by saying that I am always excited to try new lines of natural and organic hair care and skincare. In case you were wondering, my hair is more oily towards the top and dry towards the bottom and I have dry to combination skin.  I have been searching for the right natural shampoo and conditioner for years and have still not found one that I truly liked and could stick with. I have tried Natures Gate, Alaffia, Avalon Organics, Andalou Naturals, Pura D'or and Calia Natural. Natures Gate left my hair waxy and oily and Alaffia left my hair extremely dry and waxy. Avalon Organics left a grease pool in my hair and Andalou Naturals was quite nice, left my hair smooth, but quickly became greasy the following day. I will disclose my opinion of Calia Natural in a separate review.  Unfortunately, Pura D'or also left me hair quite greasy and waxy, similar to the Natures Gate shampoo and conditioner.  Let me explain that I am fully aware that when switching to natural shampoos, your hair and scalp go through some sort of an adjustment period and that natural shampoos will not lather as much, due to the lack of chemicals. When testing these shampoos, I made sure to use them for at least a month to fully see their effect on my hair and scalp. Many standard non-natural shampoos, body washes and facial cleansers contain lathering agents such as potassium hydroxide, sodium benzoate, sodium lauryl sulfate and additional sulfates. These chemicals all allow the shampoo, face or body product to lather and it is now a common misconception  in our society that a shampoo will only clean ones hair or body if it lathers. This is idea is completely false, as it is the chemical agent that causes the product to lather.  Without it, your shampoo would still operate as a cleansing agent, but would not foam. All the shampoos I mentioned above had a mild foaming effect, some chemicals (but not as many as your standard herbal essences), but I did not base my review of any of the products on that particular property.

What Brand is this?:
The shampoo, conditioner and argan oil come from the brand Pura D'or.  This company is all natural and sells products for your hair, skin and nails.  All of their products are argan oil based and claim to help ones skin retain moisture.  The main focus of their company is too create natural hair care products that strengthen and prevent fall out/hair loss.

How much does this cost and where can I purchase this?:
As far as I am aware, these products are only available from their main website, https://www.purador.com.  Some people are selling their products on EBay and Amazon, but I would be aware of their authenticity.  Their Premium Organic Shampoo Hair Loss Prevention Therapy retails for $37.00, their Argan Oil Premium Organic Conditioner Lavender Vanilla retails for $28.00 and their argan oil retails for $24.99.  Their website offers discount codes and lowered prices on certain items, but overall their prices stand as is.

What are the benefits of these products?:
Their shampoo claims to prevent hair loss and fall out, their conditioner claims to moisturize your hair and their argan oil claims to assist in hair, skin and nail health. Unfortunately, none of these products held true to their claims.  See pros and cons list further down the page.  Just a side note: I used all three products for two and a half months in order to be able to view their actual results and give my full and honest opinion.

How do I use these products?:
1.) Like any standard shampoo, I wet my hair, pump three pumps of the shampoo into my hand and work it into a lather on my hair and scalp, from root to tip.  After some intense rubbing and a scalp massage, I  thoroughly rinse out all remnants of the shampoo.

2.) After rinsing out all the shampoo, I take about three to three and a half pumps of the conditioner and apply it all over my hair, focusing mainly on my ends.  I then leave it in my hair for about three minutes or longer, while I wash my body (and shave if necessary).  After I finish washing my body, I thoroughly wash out any remaining conditioner in order to prevent greasy residue buildup.

3.) When I exit the shower, I lightly towel dry my skin and then while my skin is still slightly damp, I rub the argan oil into my skin, focusing on my legs, elbows and knees.  After using my Thayers Alcohol Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner, I apply two drops of the argan oil into my hands, rub my hands together and then gently rub the oil all over my face and neck as a moisturizer.

Product Pro's:
Shampoo:
-Gorgeous and elegant packaging.
-Cleans very well.
-Cruelty free.
-Paraben and SLS free.

Conditioner:
-Gorgeous and elegant packaging.
-Rinses clean and does not leave an oily residue.
-Cruelty free.
-Paraben and SLS free.

Argan Oil:
-Gorgeous and elegant packaging.
-Absorbs well into skin and does not leave a greasy feel.
-Cruelty free.
-Paraben free.
Product Con's:
Shampoo:
-The pump of the bottle would always get stuck.
-It is very expensive, given the poor quality of the shampoo and ingredients.
-The smell is unpleasant. Furthermore, the scent lingers in your hair for at least a day after washing.
-After rinsing, my hair felt completely stripped and dry.
-It claims to prevent hair loss, but did the complete opposite.  I had much more hair fall out than any other shampoo I used in the past.
-The ingredient list is not as natural as they claim.  Though essential oils are used, many unnecessary chemical derivatives are incorporated as well.

Conditioner:
-The pump of the bottle would always get stuck.
-It is very expensive, given the poor quality of the conditioner and ingredients.
-The smell is unpleasant.
-This left my hair oily the day after washing.
-This did not leave my hair with a silky feeling.  Instead, it felt sticky and greasy.
-The ingredient list is not as natural as they claim.  Though essential oils are used, many unnecessary chemical derivatives are incorporated as well.

Argan Oil:
-The dropper bottle was inconvenient and I was always scared that I'd knock it over and spill it.
-It is very expensive, given the poor quality.
-I have used other natural brands of argan oil (including Acure, Simplers Botanical and Aura Cacia) that have done wonders for my skin and hair.  This, however, did nothing.
-Left my skin and hair dry.
-Was not moisturizing.
-Did not have the nutty smell that many other pure argan oils have.
-Seemed to be watered down with carrier oil, even though it claims to be 100% argan oil.

Overall thoughts:
I give all three products 2 out of 5 petals.  They did not perform as they claimed and were too expensive for my taste/not in my budget.  Their products were packaged nicely, but I would not repurchase them.  It is possible that their products would work better on other hair and skin types, but it did not work for me. I am very disappointed to say that I am not happy with my experience with Pura D'or.  I still greatly appreciate that they sent me their products to try.

The pH balancer...Facial Toners De-Mistified

Hello my lovely petals,

I hope that you are all doing well. This past few weeks have been quite hectic for me. I've had a number of quizzes and exams and apologize for the delayed post. How has your week been?

Today, I will be talking about...wait for it....

Natural facial toners (Specifically Thayers Alcohol Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner)!!!!

My story:
Years ago I would just wash my face with a cleanser and go about my day. This made my skin dry and itchy. I would breakout and my skin just didn't feel healthy. I then made a decision to purchase an oil free moisturizer, hoping that that would make a difference in my skin. Well, let's just say that my skin hated that as well. It is possible that all the chemicals in my facial wash and moisturizer were irritating my skin, but I wasn't going to give up until I found a solution. I talked to friends and family hoping that they could give me advice on how to improve the condition of my skin. A friend of mine mentioned the use of a facial toner. Not knowing much about the facial products at the time, I was intrigued. She explained that when you wash your face, you strip away oils and destroy the natural pH level (acid mantel) of your sensitive facial skin. In order to replenish the lost oil, you use a moisturizer, but before doing so you have to restore your skins natural pH. To do so, she said that you use a toner. Not only does a toner restore ones pH, but many contain astringents to kill any remaining bacteria that was not cleared away from the face wash. She continued to say that it is important to tone ones face before moisturizing. If you skip the toning step, you risk the chance of spreading the remaining bacteria around your face with the moisturizer. At this point, I realized that skipping the toner was effecting the health of my skin. My face wash was stripping the oil off my skin and causing my skin to produce excess oil to replenish the oil that was lost. This led to pretty bad acne. The use of moisturizer without the previous toning step was spreading around the remaining bacteria, feeding the already existing acne and creating more. Now, all this occurred before I started using natural products, but I can assure you that incorporating a toner into your morning and evening facial routine, will dramatically improve the condition of your skin. At that time, I used an unnatural toner, yet it still improved my skins health than just using a face wash and moisturizer.

In establishing a more natural lifestyle, I was on the hunt for a pH balancing and disinfecting facial toner. Being a lover of rose, as you all know, I just had to find a rose facial toner. After hours of research, I found the most amazing toner! And here it is...

Thayers Alcohol-free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner

This toner is absolutely fantastic! Not only does it contain essential rose oil, but it contains Aloe Vera and Witch Hazel as well. In my last blog, I reviewed Heritage Store Rose Petal Rosewater spray and their Rosewater and Glycerin spray. These can be used as facial toners as well, but are a bit lighter in terms of disinfecting power. I prefer to use the Rosewater spray in the morning and the Thayers toner at night. I feel that the toner removes all the remaining dirt from the day following my shower in the evening.

What brand is this?:
This toner comes from the brand, 'Thayers'. Thayers natural remedies is an all natural company that was started in 1847 by Henry Thayer M.D. They sell a wide variety of dry mouth and throat remedies/lozenges as well as their ever so popular facial toners and astringents. Not only are their products extremely effective and beneficial, but they are quite affordable!

How much does this cost and where can I purchase this?:
I purchased mine at Whole Foods for $9.99, but you can purchase the same product for $7.56 on Luckyvitamin.com and $7.96 on Vitacost.com (see links below).  Sprouts also carries this product for about $9.99.  What a bargain!  This product is overall quite affordable and I highly suggest that you all go purchase it!

http://www.vitacost.com/thayers-witch-hazel-with-aloe-vera-rose-petal

What are the benefits of this product?:
This product works to disinfect your skin and get rid of all the remaining bacteria, gunk and residue that was not washed away by your facial cleanser.  The bottle claims to soothe your skin, and it does just that.

How do I use this product?:
-After cleansing my face at night, I apply some of the toner to a cotton round and wipe it across my face.

Product Pro's:
-Smells of a rose garden (very natural, not artificial)
-Great packaging; I love the squirt bottle!
-Extremely soothing to the skin
-Kills bacteria on contact
-Helps calm skin redness and irritation
-All natural
-Great amount for the price

Product Con's:
-None!!!!!

Overall thoughts:
I give this product 5 out of 5 petals. I have no complaints whatsoever.  This product operates exactly as stated on the bottle and is great for all skin types. I have normal to dry skin and this toner works fabulously for me!  I highly recommend that you all try it!  If you do, please let me know what you think in the comments below.

Heritage Store Rosewater...A Miracle Elixir

Hello my lovely petals,

I hope that you are all doing well. Do any of you remember the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? Do you remember how the fathers solution to everything was to 'spray a little Windex on it'? Well, I have a different solution.

Here it is! The mother of all mothers! My holy grail product and absolute necessity for all your skincare needs...

ROSEWATER!!!!!!!!!!

Wait! Isn't Rosewater expensive???.......
Well, let me introduce you to a very affordable, all natural and authentic Rosewater for all your beautification needs.

What brand is this?:
This particular rose water comes from the brand, 'Heritage Store.'  The Heritage Store offers a wide variety of all natural essential oils, flower water sprays, hair care, skin care and many other products that will fulfill your holistic health and natural needs, for very reasonable prices.

How much does this cost and where can I purchase this?:
One of my favorite products from their line has to be their Rose Petal Rose Water and Rosewater & Glycerin spray. You can purchase the Rose Petal Rosewater 8 ounce spray bottle (shown in the images above) on their website for $9.49 or a 4 ounce spray bottle for $6.49 (See link below). The same prices apply to their Rosewater & Glycerin spray.  I purchased the Rose Petal Rosewater spray for $8.49 and the Rosewater & Glycerin spray for $5.49 at Wholefoods. Vitacost.com offers their 8 ounce Rose Petal Rosewater spray for $5.99 and their 8 ounce Rosewater & Glycerin spray for $6.39 (See link below)! What a bargain! They also sell the same product with a twist-on lid, if you don't like the automizer.  I'm sure that you can find this item and other Heritage Store products at your local Wholefoods market.  Unfortunately my local Sprouts only sells Heritage Store's pure glycerin. I wish that Sprouts would carry more Heritage Store products.  Not only are they affordable, but their quality is top notch!

Heritage Store Rose Petal Rosewater spray: http://heritagestore.com/rosewater-w-atomizer-8oz-liquid.html I can't seem to find the Rosewater & Glycerin spray on their site.

Vitacost: http://www.vitacost.com/heritage-products-rose-petals-rosewater-body-splash
                http://www.vitacost.com/heritage-products-rosewater-and-glycerin-8-fl-oz-1

What are the benefits of this item?:
This Rosewater is 100% pure and is made of Vor-mag water (vortexed purified water) and Rosa Damascena hydroessential rose flower oil.  Rose water has so many benefits. From soothing your skin to improving your mood, Rosewater is the answer to your problems.  Rosewater acts as a natural disinfectant. It purifies and cleanses, while balancing your skins natural oil production and pH.  Rosewater is also very well known to help reduce redness and inflammation of the skin and scalp. Its properties are so gentle, yet effective. Rosewater can also assist in reducing both stress and anxiety.  Try adding rose water to a hot bath and you will fall into a state of complete relaxation. You can even use Rosewater to naturally relieve a tension headache.  Instead of reaching for that bottle of Tylenol, try soaking a facecloth in rose water and placing it on your forehead while laying down.  Your pain will be gone in no time! These are just a few uses for rosewater; there are many more!

How do I use these products?:
-After cleansing my face in the morning, I use either product as a toner by spritzing my entire face and neck.
-I pour some of either product in my bath for a relaxing experience.
-I pour some of either product in my cool mist humidifier for a pleasant aromatic experience before going to bed.
-After applying my makeup, I use either product as a setting by spritzing my entire face and neck.
-I spray either product on my pillow for a pleasant nights sleep.
-I spray either product in my bedroom and inhale deeply to make use of its aromatherapy benefits.
-I spray either product all over my body for a pleasant smell and overall hydrating experience.

Product Pros:
-The smell is absolutely divine; has no fake scent
-How can you resist the beautiful neon pink bottle?
-Light weight and easy to carry around in your purse for a light refreshing pick me up
-It's all natural
-Easy to use spray bottle
-Helps calm ones nerves
-Great as a facial toner!
-Gives a nice cleansed feeling to the skin and soothes redness irritation
-Great price!
-Easily available in store and online
-Great for traveling

Product Cons:
-The automizer doesn't work very well, making the mist a bit dribbly.

Overall thoughts:
I give this product 4.5 out of 5 petals*. It's only flaw is the poor automizer. Otherwise, this is an all around excellent product that has many beneficial uses. I highly recommend that you all try it! If you do, let me know what you think in the comments below.

*I will be rating all reviewed products on a level on 1 to 5 'petals,' with 1 petal being the worst and 5 petals being the best.
